What is a lab-grown diamond, lab diamond, LGD, laboratory-grown diamond?

A Lab Grown Diamond is a 100% real diamond grown in a laboratory. They are also called laboratory diamonds, lab diamonds, created diamonds, man-made diamonds, manufactured diamonds, cultured diamonds, cultivated diamonds or green diamonds.

Lab Grown Diamonds are real diamonds, they are made of the same material as mine diamonds, namely crystallized carbon, also the atoms are cubic, i.e. arranged in the same way. Many Lab diamonds belong to the purest, rarest and most expensive group Type II Diamonds to which only 2% of the mine diamonds belong. They are real diamonds which are also certified by official gemological institutes like IGI or GIA. The advantages of lab diamonds are obvious, they are much cheaper, more environmentally friendly, ethical and social. The massively better diamond price allows many customers more carats and better quality for the same budget. Often the focus is on the great quality of Lab Diamonds as well as sustainability and ethics. With Fancy Color Diamonds suddenly affordable, a whole new world and possibilities are opening up.

  • 100% genuine diamonds (official certificates IGI, GCAL, GIA etc.)
  • Our lab diamonds are chemically, physically and optically identical to mine diamonds
  • Lab diamonds are up to 95% cheaper than mine diamonds

Are laboratory diamonds 100% real diamonds?

Real diamonds (official certificates IGI, GCAL, GIA, etc.)
U.S. FTC law change

What are diamonds? Is there a definition of diamonds? What are diamonds made of? What material are diamonds made of? Do real diamonds necessarily have to come from the mine? What does natural Diamonds mean? Are Lab Grown Diamonds, lab diamonds real diamonds? Are Lab Grown Diamonds, lab diamonds the same as mine diamonds? Are there any law articles, resolutions on Lab Grown Diamonds? Is there any evidence that Lab Grown Diamonds are genuine and that they are real diamonds?
Are synthetic diamonds – synthetic Diamonds – the same as Lab Grown Diamonds? Is synthetic diamond the correct wording for Lab Grown diamond? No, according to the U.S. FTC, synthetic Diamond is eliminated as a qualifying term for Lab Grown Diamonds. There is also nothing synthetic about a Lab Grown Diamond, the carbon material is organic and identical to mine diamonds.
Recommended correct wordings for Lab Grown Diamonds are Laboratory Grown, Laboratory Created Diamonds, Green World Diamonds created Diamonds where cultured Diamonds are also acceptable.
What are cultured diamonds? What are cultured Diamonds? Is it allowed to use the name cultured diamond alone? Are Lab Grwon Diamonds identical to diamonds from the mine? Are there differences between Lab Grown Diamonds and Mine Diamonds? Can you see a difference of Lab Grown diamonds and mine diamonds?

Lab Grown diamonds are 100% real diamonds

Diamond = diamond (regardless of origin, whether from laboratory or mine)

Important legislative change in July 2018 by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which develops trade guidelines for the gemstone and jewelry industry:
“Lab grow diamonds” = diamonds, so do “(natural) mine diamonds”. According to the FTC, a diamond is a diamond regardless of its origin. “a diamond is a diamond” no matter of its origin.
… “removed a section on misleading illustrations, and eliminated the word “natural” from the definition of diamond in Section 23.12(a)” …

1) Statement that Lab Grown diamonds are 100% real diamonds!
Lab-Grown Diamonds are chemically, physically and optically identical to mine diamonds!
+ Word “natural” of diamond definition deleted
However, the Commission reminds marketers that it would be misleading to use the terms “genuine”, “unadulterated”, “natural” or “synthetic” to imply that a lab-grown diamond (i.e. a product with basically the same optical, physical and chemical properties as a mined diamond) is not in fact a genuine diamond. As discussed below, the Commission no longer defines a “diamond” in terms of “natural” because it is no longer accurate to define diamonds as “natural” when it is now possible to manufacture products that have essentially the same optical, physical, and chemical properties as diamonds mined in mines.358

2) Removal of the word “Synthetic” as a qualifying term for Lab Grown Diamonds (which are real diamonds)
However, if a marketer uses the term “synthetic” to imply that a competitor’s lab-grown diamond is not a real diamond, this would be misleading.353

3) Wording recommendations (new without “Synthetic”):
– “laboratory-grown”
– “laboratory-created”
– “[manufacturer name]-created”

4) “Cultured” diamonds:
This wording may be used (even on its own) if it is clear that the stone was produced in a laboratory.

What material are laboratory diamonds made of?

Material of real diamonds = crystallized carbon, cubic atomic lattice structure

Chemically, physically and optically identical to mining diamonds

Lab Grown Diamonds are chemically, physically and optically identical to mining/mining diamonds.
Diamond – the material, not the gemstone – is a mineral composed of “essentially pure carbon crystallized in the isometric cubic system,” according to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which develops trade guidelines for the gem and jewelry industry.

  • Crystallized carbon (pure carbon)
Both lab diamonds and mine diamonds are made of this material
  • Same chemical composition as mine diamonds
  • Same crystal structure as mine diamonds

They have the same chemical composition and crystal structure as diamonds created by nature.

What are diamonds made of? Material laboratory diamonds and mines diamonds. Both consist of the same material: crystallized carbon
What are diamonds made of? Material laboratory diamonds and mines diamonds. Both consist of the same material: crystallized carbon
Are lab diamonds real diamonds? Yes! A Lab diamond is a real, genuine diamond! Chemically, physically and optically identical to mine diamonds.

Differences between laboratory diamond and natural diamond

Lab grown Diamonds differ only in the origin of mine diamonds (lab versus mine).

Also called: “man-made” or “created” diamonds.

Sometimes wrongly called “synthetic” (synthetic diamonds)
Synthetic is wrong because crystallized carbon (from which all diamonds are made, both lab diamonds and mine diamonds) is a naturally occurring substance on earth and not synthetic. And lab diamonds (Lab-Grown Diamonds) are real, 100% genuine diamonds!

First difference = URSPRUNG laboratory versus from mining / mine

Winter day ice & ice from refrigerator

The difference between lab-grown and mine diamonds could be compared to the difference between ice that forms outside on a winter day and ice that forms in your refrigerator. Since mine diamonds are ancient, a more apt comparison might be between ice from an ancient glacier and ice from your fridge. But either way, both are ice. Both are frozen H2O, regardless of origin.
You could also say that rennet diamonds are the equivalent of cultured pearls.
By analogy with humans, the rennet diamond would be a test-tube baby.

ATTENTION
Not to be confused with “fake diamonds” such as “diamond simulants”
e.g. moissanite made of silicon carbide or “zirconia” made of zirconium(IV) oxide etc.

Are there official certificates from gemological institutes for laboratory diamonds?

Same official diamond certificates

Do Lab Grown Diamonds have official certificates from gemological institutes like IGI or GIA? Do I get a certificate for a Lab Grown Diamond? Do Lab Grown Diamonds have the same certificates as mine diamonds? What does Lab Grown Diamonds certificates say? Is a diamond certificate a guarantee?

  • Top certificates (authenticity & quality guarantee)

Quality guarantee through top certificates from renowned independent diamond testing companies/gemological institutes such as IGI, GCAL, GIA, HRD Antwerp, AGS and IGL. These test institutes, which are independent of us as the seller as well as of the manufacturing laboratories, guarantee the authenticity and quality in detail by means of a certificate.

Most Lab Grown Diamonds have IGI certificates
IGI specialized in Lab diamonds early on
(GIA etc. initially only assigned Lab diamonds a color range e.g. D-F and not an exact color e.g. F. This practice was only recently changed).

✓ SAME diamond certificates

→ from the same international gemological laboratories such as IGI, GCAL, GIA, etc.
→ evaluated with the SAME criteria as “mining diamonds” and independently, objectively analyzed, described and classified.

Example IGI Certificate

Example IGI(International Gemological Institute) Certificate

Note the section in the IGI certificate:
A laboratory grown diamond is one that has essentially the same chemical, physical and optical properties as a mined diamond, with the exception of being grown by man (a manufactured product).

Example GCAL(Gem Certification and Assurance Lab) Certificate

The certificate from GCAL. Note the “*Comments: ” section, which confirms the authenticity of this diamond.

Note the “*Comments” section in the GCAL certificate:
*Comments: This man-made diamond was grown in a laboratory by the CVD method, and has the same chemical, physical and optical properties as an earth mined diamond.

official certificates from independent certification companies (gemmological laboratories) such as IGI, GCAL, GIA etc.

These same gemological laboratories make analogous certificates for mined diamonds.

What does a diamond certificate say?

What information is on a diamond certificate? What should a diamond certificate confirm? Is there fraud, forgery in diamond certificates? Do Lab Grown Diamonds have the same certificates as natural Diamonds?

“DIAMOND”

The fact that the gemstone on the diamond certificate says “Diamond” means that it is a 100% real, genuine diamond.
If it were not a real diamond, the word diamond(= gemstone designation) should not appear here. For example, it should say Moissanite or Zirconia (although there are no certificates for Zirconias).
GCAL (Gem Certification and Assurance Lab)
Writes explicitly under *Comments → “…and has the same chemical, physical and optical properties as a mine diamond”
IGI (International Gemological Institute)
Writes explicitly under *Comments → “…A lab-grown diamond is one that has basically the same chemical, physical and optical properties as a mine diamond, except that it was grown by a human (a manufactured product).”

“LABORATORY GROWN DIAMOND”

Laboratory Grown Diamond means that it is a lab diamond, that is, a diamond grown in a laboratory. So you can be sure

  1. “clean” origin, no blood diamond
  2. sustainable / ESG / environmentally friendly

4 Cs (color, clarity, cut and carat)

Lab Grown diamonds are also graded according to the exact same 4 C’s criteria/characteristics/classification as mining diamonds. After all, they are both real diamonds.

“Comments: This laboratory grown diamond was grown using High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT).”

Often under comments is the information with which process the Lab Grown diamond is made/grown HPHT or CVD.

Do Lab Grown Diamonds have laser engraving? Certified diamonds usually have laser engraving. But there are also uncertified diamonds without engraving.
Laser engraving with number on the girdle/belt of the diamond
This makes the stone unmistakable/non-interchangeable and guarantees conflict-free & sustainable.

All Green World Diamonds (except the very small diamonds) have a laser engraving with a number (girdle/belt inscription with the report number) you can read this number with a magnifying glass on the diamond girdle and this is also written on the certificate. This way you can be sure that your stone is the one that has been assessed by the independent certification company and that it is identical to the stone on the certificate.

Note the fine inscription that adorns this diamond.

Are lab diamonds cheaper, better price than mine diamonds? Can I save money with a lab diamond?

Laboratory diamonds are up to 95% cheaper than mine diamonds

Are Lab Grown Diamonds cheaper than mine diamonds? How much cheaper are Lab Grown Diamonds than diamonds from the mine? How much can I save with Lab Grown Diamonds? How much bigger Lab Grown Diamonds do I get?

  • Cheaper, Bigger, Sparklier

More diamond for your money → bigger diamonds & better quality

Massively lower prices for Lab diamonds than for mining diamonds of mostly unknown origin.
Price gap widens with carat/diamond size & quality
…there is no objective reason to prefer a mining diamond over a Lab diamond. They differ only in their origin (natural versus laboratory) and are massively more expensive. Rather afford a larger nicer diamond instead of a smaller mined diamond.

Are there also colored laboratory diamonds?

Colored diamonds become affordable (Fancy Color Diamonds)

Are colored diamonds expensive? How much do Fancy Color Diamonds cost? Can I afford a yellow, pink or blue diamond? Are colored diamonds suitable as a gift? How about a pink or blue diamond birth or gender reveal party?

  • Fancy Color Diamonds
  • Yellow, Blue, Pink….

Thanks to the Lab Grown technique, “fancy color diamonds” (colored diamonds such as yellow, blue, pink, green, cognac, black) are suddenly affordable. Mine/mining diamonds that are colored occur extremely rarely in nature and are therefore virtually prohibitively expensive. Colored mines diamonds costs idR. several hundred thousand if not millions of CHF.

Are lab-grown diamonds more sustainable, environmentally friendly, socially responsible and ethical than mine diamonds?

Sustainable & Environmental, Social & Ethical (ESG; Sustainability)

Are Lab Grown Diamonds more sustainable, environmentally friendly, socially responsible and ethical than mine diamonds? Do Lab Grown Diamonds need a lot of energy? Are the working conditions at Lab Grown Diamonds better than at the mine? Are mining diamond jobs low paid and dangerous? Do diamonds mines have high water consumption in regions where water is scarce? How much earth has to be excavated for a mining diamond? Can a safe and ethical origin of mined diamonds really be guaranteed by means of the Kimberly Process? Can I rule out mine diamonds being blood diamonds?
If you value a sustainable lifestyle, there is no reason to buy a mined diamond. Lab-Diamonds because we care about the environment and you can buy diamonds with a good conscience… Plus the price advantage of Lab-Grown diamonds, they are much cheaper than mine diamonds.
