“Sparkling brilliance, timeless beauty – the round brilliant cut, a diamond for eternity”

“Perfect symmetry, endless sparkle – your round brilliant cut, the ultimate jewel of perfection”

A brilliant (French brilliant ‘shining’, ‘radiant’) is a round diamond with a special cut. However, the terms “diamond” and “brilliant” are often mistakenly used interchangeably.

Advantages of the brilliant cut
What makes the round diamond, the brilliant cut, so unique? What are the advantages of the brilliant cut?

  • Greatest brilliance & sparkle: generally sparkle more than other shapes with the right light reflection
  • Potential brightness is maximized
  • Most popular diamond shape (about 75% of all diamonds sold)
  • Classic & timeless
  • Stunning choice for engagement rings, necklaces and other fine jewelry
  • IGI & GIA etc. Cut Grade: “Cut” / Cut is rated by certification companies IGI, GIA etc. -> easy / accurate selection

Virtually all round diamonds are brilliant cut, meaning they have 58 facets, or 57 if there is no “culet”, meaning the lowest point is a point and not a small facet.

Disadvantages of brilliant-cut diamonds
Recommendation: What should you look out for when buying a brilliant-cut diamond? What are the disadvantages of the brilliant cut?

  • Most expensive shape (because most “polishing” of the rough diamond)
  • an excellent cut, cut is very important for the brilliance and sparkle

Which stars and celebrities have a round diamond, brilliant cut diamond engagement ring?
Many celebrities wear engagement rings with a round brilliant-cut diamond. Some examples are:

  1. Blake Lively: Her engagement ring from Ryan Reynolds is set with a large round brilliant-cut diamond in vintage style.
  2. Angelina Jolie: Brad Pitt’s engagement ring for Angelina Jolie contains an impressive round brilliant-cut diamond.
  3. Natalie Portman: Her engagement ring from Benjamin Millepied features a round brilliant-cut diamond.
  4. Reese Witherspoon: Reese Witherspoon’s engagement ring by Jim Toth is adorned with a round brilliant-cut diamond.
  5. Nikki Reed: Ian Somerhalder gave Nikki Reed an engagement ring with a round brilliant-cut diamond.

What old brilliant cuts, what vintage brilliant cuts are there?
There are different types of old brilliant cuts that are considered vintage diamonds. These have undergone different developments over the course of time. Some of the best-known old brilliant cuts are:

  1. Old European Cut (old cut): This cut was common before the modern brilliant cut and was used during the late 19. and early used in the 20th century. It is characterized by a round shape and a higher table.
  2. Old Mine Cut (mine cut): The Old Mine Cut was 18. and 19th century popular. It has a more square or cushion shape and can have smaller tables and higher crowns compared to modern diamonds.
  3. Transitional cut: This cut was used from the 1930s to the 1960s and is a transitional form between old and modern cuts. It retains some of the characteristics of the Old European Cut, but also features elements of the modern brilliant cut.
  4. Rose Cut (rose cut): This cut was common in the 19th century and has a flat, often round shape with a pointed center. It is often used for rose-shaped diamonds.
  5. Single cut: A simple cut with only 17 or 18 facets. Single cut diamonds were often used for small diamonds in the early years of the 20th century.

These old cuts often have characteristic features that are appreciated by collectors and enthusiasts. The transition to the modern brilliant cut was driven by advances in diamond cutting technology and precision.

Why we love round diamonds

Why are round brilliants so popular?
Perfect for classic looks, the round brilliant cut has been carefully designed to create the most sparkle. With a well-cut round diamond, the brilliance and scatter in each ring will impress. Even better, although this diamond shape doesn’t have the largest surface area, its intense sparkle makes it appear larger!

What should I look for in a round cut diamond, briliant?

  • Recommendation: “ideal” & “excellent”, Min. “very good”

The cut quality is what gives a diamond its sparkle. Poorly cut diamonds can appear lackluster.

What polish and symmetry should a round diamond, brilliant have?

  • Recommendation: Min. “good”; “very good” = really very good

Polish and symmetry have little effect on performance. A rating of “Good” or better is sufficient.

What should be the girdle thickness of a round diamond, brilliant?

  • Recommendation: no extremely thin & no extremely thick

Descriptions of roundel thickness include extremely thin, very thin, thin, medium, slightly thick, thick, very thick, and extremely thick.

Thinner rounds can affect the durability of the diamond, while thicker rounds can hide unnecessary weight. In both cases, the degree of grinding can be reduced.

A laser engraving with a certificate number is engraved on the girdle of the Lab diamonds.

What is a culet, diamond tip? What kind of point (culet) should a round diamond, brilliant have?

  • Recommendation: none & pointet are preferred (no very large & extremely large)

Culet size is described as the width of the lowest point/facet, if any, in relation to the average girdle diameter of a round diamond. Descriptions include: none, very small, small, medium, slightly large, large, very large, and extremely large.

“none” is used when there is no facet, sometimes referred to in the trade as a “pointed” culet.

Larger facets can have a negative effect on the appearance of the diamond, especially its pattern, and lower its cut grade.

https://www.gia.edu/diamond-cut/diamond-cut-anatomy-round-brilliant

What is a Diamond Table? What kind of table should a round diamond, brilliant have?

  • Recommendation: 54-57% (although 53 to 59% is also very good)

The table of a diamond is the large, flat facet on the top of the stone. The table size or table% tells you how wide the table is compared to the width of the diamond. If the tablet is too large or too small, the light will exit the back of the diamond instead of returning to you.

Ideally, the table size is 54-57%. However, diamonds can also perform excellently with table sizes of 53 to 59%.

https://www.gia.edu/diamond-cut/diamond-cut-anatomy-round-brilliant

What is the diamond depth (Depth)? What Depth should a round diamond, brilliant have?

  • Recommendation: 61 to 62.6% (although 59 to 63% is also very good)

The depth% in a diamond tells you the ratio of depth to width. When a diamond is cut too deep or too shallow, the light on the back escapes and reduces the amount of light reflected back to you. That means he’s performing poorly.

To avoid shallow and deep cuts, limit your search to diamonds with an ideal depth percentage of 61 to 62.6%. If you need a few more options, you can look for depths from 59% to 63%.

https://www.gia.edu/diamond-cut/diamond-cut-anatomy-round-brilliant

What should be the minimum clarity of a round cut diamond, briliant?

  • Recommendation: Min. VS2, from 3 carat min. VS1

When is a diamond “eyeclean”?
There is no specific clarity grade that guarantees an eye-clean diamond. For example, a VS2 does not necessarily mean it is eye clean, but in many cases it is.

The choice of purity is a balance of quality and cost. The VS2 and SI1 purity grades are a good compromise between eye-clean quality and a lower price.

For large diamonds, consider a VS1 stone or higher clarity.

What are the perfect dimensions for a brilliant, round diamond? What mass should a brilliant have in terms of depth and table?

  • Cut: “ideal” & “excellent”
  • Polish & Symmetry: Min. “good”
  • Girdle Thickness: no extremely thin & no extremely thik
  • Culet: none & pointet are preferred (no very large & extremely large)
  • Depth: 61 to 62.6% (although 59 to 63% is also very good)
  • Table 54-57% (although 53 to 59% also very good)

How can I save money on a brilliant, round diamond?

The round brilliant cut is the most popular diamond shape – and often the most expensive. Here are the best tips for finding a beautiful brilliant cut diamond at a better price:

Lab Grown Diamonds 💰 – The biggest saving! Lab-grown diam onds are up to 70% cheaper than mine-grown diamonds, with identical beauty & quality.
Lab-grown diamonds are a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to natural diamonds. They have the same chemical, physical and optical composition as natural diamonds, but are often 30-50% or even up to 95% cheaper. For environmentally conscious, ethical buyers and those on a limited budget, lab-grown diamonds offer an excellent opportunity to purchase a high-quality round diamond.

VS1 or better for lab diamonds 🔍 – VS2 or SI1 is often sufficient for mine diamonds, as small inclusions are invisible to the naked eye. With lab diamonds, the price differences are minimal – therefore at least VS1 is recommended for a flawless appearance.
Not only “Triple Ex” look ✨ – A very good cut (VG) or well-cut ideal stone can be a cheaper alternative. Nevertheless, the cut remains the most important factor for the sparkle, which is why it is worth taking a close look here. 💎✨
Use carat limits 📏 – With mine diamonds, a 0.90 ct instead of 1.00 ct or 1.80 ct instead of 2.00 ct can save hundreds. This effect is generally not relevant for laboratory diamonds, as they are priced differently.
Choose your color carefully 🎨 – G-H colors usually look colorless in white gold & platinum, but you should take a closer look at laboratory diamonds, as even F tones can have brownish nuances.
Because of the brilliance, you can compromise on color and clarity. The color depends on the metal setting, but an I or J still looks good in white gold, as does a K-colored diamond in yellow or rose gold!

Fluorescence can help 🌟 – Light fluorescence (Faint to Medium) can make a J-K color stone appear whiter & lower the price.
Smaller stones with a narrow band 💍 – A narrower ring band makes the stone appear larger.

💡 Extra tip:
Pavé, halo or cluster designs with many smaller diamonds create an impressive sparkle – and are often cheaper than one large stone!

Conclusion: If you choose strategically, you get a brilliant, sparkling stone without compromising – but with noticeable savings! 😊💎

When was the round diamond cut, the brilliant, invented? What is the history of brilliant round diamonds?
The cut is called brilliant cut and was developed around 1910. It is characterized by high brilliance. In 1919, Marcel Tolkowsky established the Tolkowsky Brilliant with a very good light output.

The diamond has been used as a gemstone for at least 2000 years. But specific editing is made only since the 14th century. Initially, only the natural crystal surfaces were polished for improved appearance. Pointed stone was the name given to this diamond cut, which was largely left in its natural form. In the further development (thick stone, table stone), an additional large surface on the upper side (table) and a small one on the lower side (calette, rib) was created by splitting or grinding off the octahedron top.

15th century: More and more additional facets were made, thanks to the development of the slip sheet. Around 1650, at the suggestion of the French Cardinal Mazarin, a diamond with 34 faces (32 facets plus table and culet) and a rounded, though not yet circular, ground plan(roundel) was developed for the first time. Called double good or Mazarin cut, which at the end of the17th century. The cut was optimized by the Venetian gem cutter Peruzzi in the middle of the 19th century to the Triple Good or Peruzzi cut. This already had all the facets and similar proportions of the later brilliant cut. But even in the old cut, the immediate predecessor of the modern brilliant, the circular body has not yet been consistently implemented. This happened only at the beginning of the 20th century.

Since diamonds of good gemstone quality are very expensive, people have of course always strived to be as efficient as possible when cutting them. The aim is to achieve the greatest possible optical effect with the least possible loss of material and to increase the value of the product.
