You cannot evaluate the cut quality of a marquise diamond in the same way as a round brilliant cut diamond. Indeed, as with all Fancy Shape diamonds, the cut quality of a marquise is largely subjective.
You should choose a diamond with an appealing shape. If a diamond looks a little out of place, it is likely due to a poor shape or asymmetry.
A marquise shape should have pointed tips. The areas on either side of the tips are called “wings”. Make sure these are not too flat or bulky. The central area called the “belly” should also have a gentle curve, neither flat nor bulging.
Symmetry
Visibly poor symmetry is disadvantageous for a marquise cut diamond. To assess symmetry, draw an imaginary line from tip to tip through the diamond. Then check that the tips, wings, and belly appear symmetrical. Next, draw another imaginary line through the center of the abdomen. Make sure that the diamond is symmetrical in this direction as well.
Asymmetry is particularly noticeable in marquise-cut diamonds because of their elongated shape. If you’ve got an asymmetrical marquise cut, you’ll notice it.
Note that this “shape symmetry” is not the same as the “symmetry” on a diamond grading report, which relates only to facet symmetry. A facet symmetry rating of “Good” or better can produce a beautiful marquise-cut diamond.

Due to the facet pattern, each marquise-cut diamond has a bowtie effect – a dark band across the center of the stone. However, some are more pronounced than others. Avoid big bowties.
Color
What color should marquise diamonds be at least?
Like other fancy shapes , a marquise-cut diamond shows color more easily than a round diamond. The color is usually most evident near the tips.
When pairing a marquise diamond with white gold or platinum, stick to a color grade of H or better. An H-colored diamond will appear white and cost less than a higher color grade.
With rings made of yellow and rose gold, a marquise diamond still looks colorless, down to the color K. Since the metal already reflects part of the color in the diamond, the slight warmth in a K-colored diamond against colored metal will still be white look.
Clarity
What should be the minimum clarity of a marquise diamond?
Marquise cut diamonds have a great brilliance and hide inclusions even with a low degree of purity. Although eye-clean SI1 diamonds exist, marquise-cut diamonds with inclusions near the sides are preferable to those with inclusions in the center. Large, dark imperfections near the center are likely to be visible to the eye, but other types of imperfections may not be.
