Famous Pink Diamonds

High-carat pink diamonds have led several auctions in recent years.

  • 2019: “Bubble Gum Pink Diamond” 3.43 Carat Fancy Vivid Purplish Pink, Internally Flawless, Strong Blue Fluorescence -> Christie’s $7.52 million.
  • November 16, 2010: “Graff Pink” diamond (fancy intense pink) 24.78 carats -> Sotheby’s for $46 million
  • May 2011: “Graff Pink” diamonds in intense pink 10.99 carats -> Sotheby’s $10.84 million
  • “Argyle Mystra” round 2.02ct Fancy Vivid Purplish Pink -> ideal combination of carat weight, intensity, cut (round is a very rare shape for a colored diamond) and purple overtone, making this one of the rarest pink diamonds available

Pink Lab diamonds are produced using three different methods

  1. Temperature post-treatment (600°C to 1000°C) of rare pure TypeIIa diamonds
  2. Only for CVD Lab diamonds (not for HPHT) during growth 520 nm spectral band
  3. Addition of large amounts of silicon to the CVD growth process & UV irradiation

1st method (most common)

Temperature post-treatment (600°C to 1000°C) of rare pure TypeIIa diamonds
Irradiation of a diamond grown in the laboratory with nitrogen impurities
→ then expose to moderate temperatures (600°C to 1000°C)
→ produces modification in the crystal lattice (caused by a missing carbon atom adjacent to a nitrogen atom within the lattice), a so-called nitrogen-vacancy center, which is responsible for the color

Only about 0.5% of pink mined diamonds possess this nitrogen-vacancy center, which can be identified by spectroscopic lines at 575 nm and 637 nm
= “nitrogen vacancy pinks”
= “Golconda-Rosa” (but they don’t necessarily have a connection to the Indian mine)

These are type IIa diamonds – a rare type of diamond with an exceptionally pure chemical composition: almost entirely carbon, with negligible amounts of nitrogen or boron – with a very uniform pink color and no visible colored lamellae.

2nd method

Only for CVD Lab diamonds (not for HPHT) during growth 520 nm spectral band

Only occurs in lab diamonds with CVD (chemical vapor deposition), in which a 520 nm spectral band is generated during growth, resulting in an orangy pink color. The GIA has only seen a few of these stones and the color is not as vibrant as other pink lab-grown diamonds.

3rd method (rarest)

Addition of large amounts of silicon to the CVD growth process & UV irradiation

Addition of large amounts of silicon to the CVD growth process which, when exposed to UV irradiation, produces a reversible color change between the stable pink color and a temporary blue color.
